How to open .SXC files on Linux

To open .SXC files on Linux, install LibreOffice (Calc) or Apache OpenOffice (Calc) from your distribution’s package manager.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Install LibreOffice (Calc) or Apache OpenOffice (Calc) from your distribution’s package manager.
  2. Open the app and use File > Open (or right-click the .SXC file in your file manager > Open With > select LibreOffice Calc/OpenOffice Calc).
  3. If your desktop mis-identifies the file type, open it from within Calc using File > Open.

Common issues

The .SXC file opens as garbled text or in the wrong app

The file association may be incorrect, or the system may treat it as a generic XML/text file instead of a Calc spreadsheet.

  1. Open LibreOffice Calc or Apache OpenOffice Calc first, then use File > Open to select the .SXC file.
  2. On Windows/macOS/Linux, set the default app for .SXC to your spreadsheet suite via “Open with” / “Get Info” / file properties.

Error when opening or “file is corrupted” message

The file may be incomplete (bad download/copy), or it may not actually be an SXC spreadsheet despite the extension.

  1. Re-download or re-copy the file from the original source (avoid email clients that may alter attachments).
  2. Try opening the file with both LibreOffice Calc and Apache OpenOffice Calc to rule out a single-app compatibility issue.

Layout, formulas, or formatting look different after opening

Because .SXC is a legacy format, modern suites may import it with minor differences in formatting or formula handling.

  1. Check key sheets, formulas, and charts after opening, especially if accuracy is critical.
  2. If you need stable long-term editing, save a copy to a newer format from within the spreadsheet app and work from that copy.

.SXC is a spreadsheet format; treat it like any document from an untrusted source—malicious content may target application parsing or spreadsheet features.
