How to open .SPO files on Windows

  3. If it still won’t open, confirm the file was created by an older SPSS version (v15 or earlier) and try opening it with a matching SPSS/Viewer version.

Common issues

The .SPO file won’t open (missing or wrong SPSS/Viewer version)

.spo is an older, proprietary SPSS output format, and some newer setups may expect .spv instead or may not include compatible viewing components.

  1. Try opening the file using IBM SPSS Statistics or an SPSS Viewer known to support .spo output.
  2. If available, use a system with an SPSS/Viewer version aligned with the older .spo format (commonly SPSS v15 and earlier).

Created output but cannot view it after saving as .spo

This is a known scenario addressed in IBM support: the saved .spo requires the correct SPSS Viewer/SPSS components to view the output file.

  1. Follow IBM’s support guidance for viewing .spo output (ensure the appropriate viewer/component is installed and used to open the file).
  2. Re-open the file from inside SPSS/Viewer (File  Open) rather than relying on double-click file associations.

The file is mislabeled as a “document” and opened in the wrong program

Because .spo isn’t a general text or Word-like document, operating systems may prompt you to choose an app, and choosing a generic editor will show gibberish or fail.

  1. Use “Open with” and select IBM SPSS Statistics / SPSS Viewer (not a text editor or office suite).
  2. If you don’t see SPSS/Viewer as an option, install it or open the file directly from within SPSS/Viewer.

Security note

.spo files are proprietary binary documents; avoid opening them with unknown third-party viewers or converters from untrusted sources, since malformed files can sometimes trigger parser vulnerabilities.
