How to open .SIPA files on Windows

To open .SIPA files on Windows, if you received the file as a Smint.io export and want to restore/transfer, use Smint.io Portals’ import function (preferred for actual portal restore).

  2. To inspect or extract the contents, open it with a ZIP-compatible archiver; if the tool doesn’t recognize .sipa, open the tool first and select the file manually (or copy the file and change the copy’s extension to .zip).

Common issues

The file won’t open because apps don’t recognize .sipa

Many archive tools expect .zip and may not automatically detect .sipa even though the file is a renamed ZIP archive.

  1. Try opening it from inside your archive tool (File → Open) rather than double-clicking.
  2. If that fails, create a copy and rename the copy from .sipa to .zip, then extract with a ZIP tool.
  3. If your goal is restoration rather than inspection, use Smint.io Portals import instead of extracting.

Extraction works, but you can’t “restore” the portal from the extracted files

A SIPA is intended to be imported as an archive into Smint.io Portals; simply unzipping may not recreate the portal or preserve the import workflow.

  1. Use Smint.io Portals’ import feature with the original .sipa file when you need an actual portal restore/migration.
  2. Only unzip when you specifically need to inspect contents (for example, to verify what was exported).

Archive tool reports the SIPA/ZIP is corrupted or incomplete

The download/export may have been interrupted, resulting in a broken ZIP container.

  1. Re-download the .sipa file or re-export it from Smint.io Portals.
  2. If you must salvage data, try a different ZIP tool that can attempt partial extraction, but expect missing files.

Security note

Treat .sipa like any ZIP archive: it can contain many files, including scripts or executables, so don’t run extracted content unless you trust the source.
