How to open .SGL files on Linux

To open .SGL files on Linux, open the file with LibreOffice Writer or Apache OpenOffice Writer (for example, from the file manager’s Open With menu).

  2. If your desktop uses shared-mime-info, .sgl may already be recognized as application/vnd.stardivision.writer-global; choose Writer as the default app if prompted.

Common issues

The .sgl file opens but the chapters/sections are missing

Master documents often reference other documents; if those component files were not copied along with the .sgl (or paths changed), Writer may not be able to load them.

  1. Make sure all referenced sub-documents were provided and placed in the correct folders relative to the .sgl file.
  2. If you can open the master document, update any broken links/paths inside Writer and re-save.

It won’t open in a typical archive tool

Despite the name “archive” in some listings, .sgl is commonly a Writer Global (master document) format rather than a general-purpose compressed archive.

  1. Try opening it with LibreOffice Writer or Apache OpenOffice Writer instead of an unzip/archiver tool.
  2. If you expected a compressed archive, confirm the file extension and source; it may have been mislabeled.

File opens with formatting or layout differences

Legacy StarWriter formats can render differently in modern suites, especially for complex styles, indexes, or document structures used by master documents.

  1. Open the file in both LibreOffice Writer and Apache OpenOffice Writer to compare results.
  2. Consider exporting to a modern format (for example, from within Writer) after verifying the layout.

Linux desktop shows an unexpected file association

File type recognition/associations come from the shared MIME database and your desktop’s chosen defaults; they can be misconfigured.

  1. Use Open With to select LibreOffice Writer or OpenOffice Writer and set it as the default for .sgl.
  2. If you manage MIME associations system-wide, verify that *.sgl is mapped to application/vnd.stardivision.writer-global in your shared-mime-info setup.

Security note

.sgl is a document format handled by office suites; treat files from unknown sources cautiously because document parsers can have vulnerabilities and documents can embed complex content.
