Common issues

The file opens with an error or won’t play at all

Many .PYV files are PlayReady/WMDRM-protected; without a valid license and compatible DRM playback pipeline, players may refuse to open them or show playback errors.

  1. Open it using the original service/app that provided the download (the license is often bound to that environment).
  2. If you expected an unprotected video, verify with the sender/provider whether it is DRM-protected content.
  3. Do not assume the file is corrupted just because common players cannot play it; DRM is a frequent cause.

Renaming .PYV to .MP4/.WMV doesn’t help

Changing the extension does not remove DRM or change the underlying format; it only changes how the OS guesses the file type.

  1. Keep the .PYV extension and use a compatible DRM-capable player/service.
  2. If you need a different format, look for an official export/download option from the content provider (if permitted).

Opens the wrong app or shows as an unknown file type

Your system may not have a MIME/extension association for .pyv, or it may not have any installed app that advertises support.

The file plays on one device but not another

DRM licenses can be device-, account-, or app-bound; a .PYV file may be valid but only authorized on specific devices.

  1. Sign in to the same account in the provider’s app on the other device and attempt playback there.
  2. Re-download the content using the provider’s app on the target device so it can obtain the correct license.

Security note

.PYV is a video type, but playback requires complex DRM/media parsing; only open files from sources you trust to reduce exposure to maliciously crafted media files.
