How to open .PAGES files on iOS

Common issues

It won’t open on Windows (or opens as an unknown file type)

Most Windows apps do not natively support Apple’s .pages format, so double-clicking typically fails or prompts you to choose an app.

  1. Open it with Pages for iCloud in a browser and then export to DOCX or PDF.
  2. If you don’t have iCloud access, ask the sender to export to DOCX/PDF from Pages on their device.
  3. If you received it by email/chat, re-download the attachment to ensure it wasn’t partially saved.

Layout or fonts change after converting to DOCX

Pages documents can use layout features, templates, and fonts that do not map perfectly to Word’s DOCX format.

  1. Export to PDF if the goal is accurate viewing/printing rather than editing.
  2. If you must edit in Word, export to DOCX and then review formatting (especially text boxes, tables, and page layout sections).
  3. When possible, keep editing in Pages and only export at the end for sharing.

Pages says the file is damaged or can’t be opened

The file may be incomplete (interrupted download/transfer) or corrupted.

  1. Re-download or re-copy the file from the original source (avoid chat apps that may alter attachments).
  2. Try opening it in Pages for iCloud to rule out a local-app issue.

I only need to view it, but don’t have Pages

Viewing is often easier than editing, but you still need a compatible viewer or an exported format.

  2. Request a PDF export for easiest viewing on any platform.
  3. If someone sent you a DOCX export, open that in your usual word processor instead.

Security note
