  1. Check whether the application specifically mentions AVCI, image/avci, H.264 in HEIF, or AVC-coded still images.
  2. Update the application and its HEIF/H.264 decoding libraries.
  3. Try a different tool rather than renaming the file to .heic or .avif.

Conversion fails or produces a blank image

The converter may have been built without the required HEIF or H.264/MPEG-4 AVC support, or the file may be incomplete.

  1. Verify the file size and re-download or re-copy the file if it may be truncated.
  2. Test the file with a diagnostic command such as "gm identify file.avci" in a compatible GraphicsMagick build.
  3. If possible, open the original file on the device or application that created it and export a new copy.

The file was renamed but still will not open

Changing the extension does not change the internal image format. A real .AVCI file must contain the correct HEIF/AVCI structure.

  1. Restore the original filename extension if it was changed.
  2. Use a real export or conversion tool to create PNG, JPEG, or another target format.
  3. If you are unsure what the file is, inspect it with a file identification tool rather than guessing by extension.

Security note

.AVCI files are image files and are not expected to contain macros or executable scripts, but malformed image files can still target bugs in HEIF or H.264 decoders.
