.ART file extension

To open .ART files on Windows, find out where the file came from: embroidery, ArtCAM/CNC, or an old AOL image download.

To open a .ART file, use the program that created it or a compatible specialist app: BERNINA embroidery software for BERNINA ART designs, Carveco for ArtCAM model files, or a legacy-compatible image viewer/converter for AOL ART images. Do not rename the file extension, because different .ART formats are not interchangeable.

How to open .ART files

Use these platform-specific instructions to open .ART files safely.

Windows

  1. Find out where the file came from: embroidery, ArtCAM/CNC, or an old AOL image download.
  2. For BERNINA embroidery designs, open the file from BERNINA embroidery software that supports ART files.
  3. For ArtCAM model files, open the file in Carveco or another installed application that explicitly supports ArtCAM .art files.
  4. For old AOL ART images, try a legacy-compatible image viewer or converter that specifically lists AOL ART support; avoid relying on modern browsers.

Mac

  1. macOS does not have built-in support for the main .ART formats.
  2. Check the file's origin, then use the relevant specialist software if available to you, or transfer the file to a Windows desktop workflow used for BERNINA, ArtCAM, or legacy image conversion.
  3. If you only need to view the contents, ask the sender to export to a common format such as PNG/JPEG for images or a machine-supported embroidery/CAM exchange format.

Linux

  1. Linux desktop environments do not normally include native .ART support.
  2. Identify the format first; if it is a BERNINA or ArtCAM file, open it on a desktop system with the appropriate specialist software.
  3. For an AOL ART image, use only a viewer or converter that explicitly supports the AOL ART image format.

iOS

  1. iPhone and iPad Files/Quick Look usually cannot preview .ART files.
  2. Send the file to the desktop software that matches its source, or ask the sender to export it to a common viewable format.

Android

  1. Android usually has no built-in support for .ART files.
  2. Transfer the file to the correct desktop application, or ask the sender for an exported PNG/JPEG, embroidery machine format, or other usable format depending on the file type.

Security notes

  • .ART files are usually data, image, embroidery, or model files rather than programs, but malformed files can still exploit bugs in old or complex viewers.
  • Be especially cautious with legacy AOL ART files and avoid opening untrusted files in obsolete browser software.
  • For embroidery and CAM workflows, inspect the design, stitch simulation, model, or toolpaths before running a machine; a file from an unknown source may cause unwanted machine movement or material damage.
  • Do not trust a MIME label alone. Some references map .art differently, and message/rfc822 is an email message media type rather than a reliable identifier for .ART files.

Can't open this file?

These are the most common causes and fixes when .ART files fail to open.

Common reasons

  • The wrong program opens the file
  • The file will not preview on phone, Mac, or Linux
  • An old AOL ART image will not open in a modern browser
  • Embroidery or CAM output does not look right

Fix steps

  1. Check where the file came from and what it was used for.
  2. Open BERNINA ART files in compatible BERNINA embroidery software.
  3. Open ArtCAM .art model files in software that explicitly supports ArtCAM files, such as Carveco.
  4. Open AOL ART images only with a viewer or converter that specifically supports that legacy image format.

What is a .ART file?

.ART is not one single universal format. It is used by BERNINA as a native embroidery design format, by ArtCAM for proprietary model files that Carveco documents as compatible, and historically by AOL for compressed images. Because these formats have different internal structures, a program that opens one kind of .ART file usually cannot open another.

Background

If the file came from a relief carving, CNC, or ArtCAM project, it may be an ArtCAM Model file. Carveco documents compatibility with proprietary ArtCAM files, including model files using the .art extension.

Common MIME types: message/rfc822

Common .ART issues

The wrong program opens the file

.ART is used by unrelated formats, so an embroidery .ART file, an ArtCAM model, and an AOL image are not the same kind of file.

The file will not preview on phone, Mac, or Linux

Most .ART formats are specialist or legacy formats and are not supported by standard file preview tools.

  1. Do not assume the file is broken just because it will not preview.
  2. Move the file to the correct desktop workflow for embroidery, CAM, or legacy image conversion.
  3. Ask the sender to export a common format if you only need to view the result.

An old AOL ART image will not open in a modern browser

The AOL ART image format was historically associated with AOL software and Internet Explorer support, but it is not a normal modern web image format.

  1. Try a converter or image tool that explicitly lists AOL ART support.
  2. Ask for the original image in a common format such as JPEG or PNG if possible.
  3. Avoid installing old browser components only to view an untrusted file.

Embroidery or CAM output does not look right

Design and model formats can contain more than a simple preview, including objects, stitches, colors, outlines, or machining/model data. Opening the file in the wrong version or exporting incorrectly can change the result.

  1. Open the file in the software family it was created for.
  2. Review the design preview, stitch information, or toolpath/model data before sending it to a machine.
  3. If sharing with someone else, use the software's export or save-as function rather than renaming the file.

FAQ

Why are there different kinds of .ART files?

The .ART extension has been reused by unrelated software. BERNINA uses it for embroidery designs, ArtCAM used it for model files, and AOL used it for compressed images.

Can I convert a .ART file by renaming it?

No. Renaming only changes the filename suffix. Use the export, save-as, or conversion feature in software that can actually read your specific type of .ART file.

What should I do if I do not know what kind of .ART file I have?

Ask the sender or check the context: embroidery machine/design files suggest BERNINA ART, CNC or relief carving projects suggest ArtCAM, and old web or AOL downloads may be AOL ART images.

Is .ART the same as an email .eml file because of message/rfc822?

No. The official IANA registry lists message/rfc822 as an email message media type. Available MIME mapping references do not make that a reliable or general MIME type for .ART files.
